Late check in the hotel depends on few issues. Firstly the open hours of the front office. Most of the hotels have 24hour reception. However, it is not common in every kind of accommodation place.

If someone books the stay in a 3,4, 5 star hotel, probably has nothing to worry about. All-time open reception is a standard there.

Some of the hotels have other kind of solutions for late check in. For example, mobile check in is very popular nowadays. Guest needs to have an hotel app on their smartphone, and then he/she can do everything via app. This option is usually used in the hotel loyality program (which means that one needs to be registered as a member). Another mobile possibility is that the hotel sends guest access codes to the main door and the room.

Another solution is that the receptionist prepares room keys and leaves them in the envelope with the guests name on it. Then sends to the guest information via email or SMS how to check in, and where to find the keys.

Of course, those are possible solutions and are not used in every hotel. It depends on the hotel policy or the country where is it located. Cultural and law issues may be important. For example in some countries it may be forbidden to leave an envelope with guest details on it to be seen by anyone, it can be considered a risk or something inappropriate.
