What are the types of breakfast in hotel?

Hotel breakfast is one of the very important issues. It can make a guest more or less satisfied about the stay. Tasty, quickly served and multiple different options to chose is something very expected. What are the most popular types of breakfast in hotel? How serving the breakfast looks? Is it possible to have take away breakfast in the hotel?

Continental breakfast

This is one of the most popular type, it is used as a basic breakfast in many hotels. Lower-range hotels usually chose continental breakfast as the only breakfast option, because it is a most simple one.

The continental breakfast definition is similar to french and Mediterranean breakfast. The basic version includes:

  • bread,
  • pastries,
  • fruits,
  • spreads and jams,
  • beverages: juice, coffee, tea.

Expanded may include as well:

  • cheeses,
  • eggs,
  • ham,
  • breakfast cereals,
  • porridge,
  • muesli,
  • yogurt.

American breakfast

The second very popular breakfast type is American style breakfast. It is a more heavy and bigger choice than a continental one.

Full American breakfast includes:

  • bread and spreads,
  • meathod – ham, sausage, bacon,
  • sliced cheese,
  • boiled eggs,
  • scrambled eggs,
  • eggs benedict,
  • omelet,
  • pancakes,
  • toasted bread,
  • waffles,
  • sweet crepes,
  • casserole or quiche,
  • choice of fruits and vegetables,
  • porridge,
  • pastries and sweet buns eg. muffin, croissants,
  • beverages: tea, coffee, juice.

English breakfast

English breakfast is less popular all over the world comparing to continental and american breakfast. However, it is served in hotels.

Typical English breakfast includes:

  • bread and spreads,
  • meathod – ham, sausage, bacon,
  • sliced cheese,
  • fried eggs,
  • toasted bread,
  • beans,
  • mushrooms,
  • pudding,
  • choice of vegetables,
  • sauces eg. ketchup, mustard,
  • beverages: tea, coffee.

Vegetarian breakfast

Vegetarian breakfast in the hotel is served as well. In case the hotel restaurant serves breakfast as a buffee table, there is a choice of vegetarian options.

Restaurants that serve breakfast a la carte should have vegetarian/vegan breakfast option on the menu.

Hotel breakfast hours and service

In most of the hotels, breakfast is served in the restaurant as a buffee table. Therefore there may be mixed somehow all kinds of breakfast. In high-range hotels breakfast options to choose from are really huge, in some of them, there is literally everything. Smaller hotels offer less choice and there can be only a few options from a certain breakfast style (basic version) which may be different depending on every hotel.

Some hotels serve breakfast a la carte. As well in the hotels which offer room service, it is possible to order breakfast to the room. In this case, guest needs to choose from the breakfast menu available. There can be offered only one type of breakfast or a few types, depending on hotel size and range. For example, the menu may include three options: Continental / American / Vegetarian.

Hotel breakfast hours are different in every hotel. The most popular breakfast time is from 7 to 10 (+-1 hour). Hotels that are located near to airport usually start breakfast time very early around 5 am.

Breakfast box

It is good to remember that hotel may offer takeaway breakfast. If breakfast is included in a room price, but a guest knows that he /she will not be able to eat it in the hotel restaurant (eg. because of very early check out), it should be possible to order a breakfast box to take away. Orders can be made the day before by contacting with hotel reception or the restaurant.

To sum up, hotels offer mainly three types of breakfast: english, american, and continental breakfast. It may be served as a buffee table, a la carte, or to the room. It is common that hotel restaurants have vegan and vegetarian breakfast options on the menu. Those who are not sure if they can eat breakfast during serving hours may order a takeaway breakfast box.
