Why hotel needs your credit card for check-in?

The hotel needs your debit or credit card during check-in to make a pre-authorization. It means that the receptionist will block a certain amount of money in your account. How much money will be blocked depends from:

• length of your stay,
• total room price,
• use of hotel extra services,
• was the booking pre-paid or not.

The best way to avoid giving your payment card for pre-authorization is to pay in advance for a room and not open a hotel bill. Eventually, during hotel check-in, you can pay with cash or make a cash deposit instead.

If you would like to open a hotel bill to pay for all hotel services during checkout, you have to give a payment guarantee. The hotel needs to pre-authorize the card to make sure that it will be able to charge you later for all expenses. In this situation, a cash deposit may be possible as well instead of a credit/debit card.
